Gama to steam Transnet ahead

Siyabonga Gama is not someone who will find his predecessors’ shoes too big to fill, but will ably carry on the legacy of success, as the newly appointed CEO of the ports and rail utility, Transnet.  His predecessor, Brian Molefe, steered Transnet from a loss making state to an entity generating billions in turnover annually.
Gama has made his objective clear: “My job is to galvanize the executive team, to make sure that we steer the ship, that we keep it on course and we continue our plans. We already have a business plan for the 2015/16 financial year. We have to take that and make sure that we execute.”
Gama is not wet behind the ears as some commentators on social media platforms have suggested. He has headed Transnet’s freight rail unit since February 2011. He first joined the company in 1994.
In a press release, Transnet gave Gama its blessing: “On behalf of all of us at Transnet Engineering, we wish to thank Mr Gama for accepting this challenging task. He is guaranteed of our unwavering support.”
The Public Enterprises Minister, Lynn Brown, has “deployed” Molefe to Eskom to steady the ship. Public sentiment is that his appointment should be made permanent.
Gama will have no honeymoon spell. He has his work cut out with Transnet refurbishing its infrastructure, starting the purchase of 1000 new locomotives.
