Professor Sakhela Buhlungu new University of Fort Hare Vice-Chancellor

BuhlunguThe University of Fort Hare has appointed Professor Sakhela Buhlungu as its new Vice-Chancellor. Prof Buhlungu is the former dean of humanities at the University of Cape Town and he assumed his new position at the Alice based tertiary institution on the 1st February. His predecessor, Dr Mvuyo Tom’s contract at the 100 year old university ended in December.
Prof Buhlungu obtained his BA at the University of Transkei in 1982 before getting his honours at UCT and then his masters and PhD at Wits. He was previously a Professor of Sociology at the universities of Pretoria‚ Johannesburg and Wits. The former teacher from Manzana High School‚ Engcobo‚ Eastern Cape (1983 – 1984) also worked as an assistant general secretary of the Cosatu-affiliated Paper‚ Printing‚ Wood & Allied Workers’ Union (PPWAWU).
University of Fort Hare Chirperson of Council Ms Thandi Orleyn, welcomed Professor Buhlungu to the institution. “On behalf of Council, I take this opportunity to welcome Professor Buhlungu and trust that the University Community will provide him with all the support that he will need in executing his mandate as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Fort Hare,” said Ms Orleyn.
