Civil servants will have to justify the R33bn that they cost the tax payers annually in wages through becoming more productive, Public Service and Administration Minister, Ngoako Ramatlhodi, said this during a recess at the Congress of South African Trade Unions (Cosatu) national congress.
Backing what Finance Minister, Nhlanhla Nene, commented in his Medium Budget Policy, Ramatlhodi revealed that organisations like Productivity SA and the Governance School would be engaged to improve output. Further, he suggested that salaries be linked to high productivity so that much could be done with the financial resources that were committed.
As part a move to stem the spiraling costs of maintaining a bloated civil service, Ramatlhodi announced that it would freeze hiring new staff in the public service.
