Anglo America’s employees in South Africa should be wondering whether they would have jobs by 2017, following the mining giant’s recent announcement.
Anglo America’s CEO, Mark Cutifani, announced that his company aims to cut around 60 000 jobs as part of a wider re-organisation.
He said the company was aiming to cut the number of direct employees and contractors to about 102 000 in 2017 from about 162 000 in 2013.
The chief executive of Anglo American’s iron ore subsidiary Kumba also said on Tuesday that he had proposed a 40% reduction in jobs at the company’s headquarters in Pretoria.
Anglo American has been saying that it had planned to embark on cost cutting measures to remain sustainable.
